I. Background

Kanglung Gewog lies on the lateral route of Trashigang- Samdrup Jongkhar Highway and it is located 22 kms away from Trashigang Dzongkhag. The Kanglung Geog has an area of 63.32 sq. km and is located in the North of Khaling, North-East of Udzorong, South-West of Samkhar and has a border with Dremitse Geog of Mongar Dzongkhag. The Geog has a temperate climate with warm summer and cold winter. Geog landscape is mostly mountainous terrain; however, proper Kanglung is in gentle slope. The soil is acidic in nature. The highest altitude recorded in the Gewog is 3700 metres approximately and lowest altitude recorded is 550 metres approximately above the sea level.

Kanglung Geog has 5 Major Villages called Chiwog, which further sub-divided into minor villages with minimum households of 1 to 2 and goes up to the maximum of 20 to 30 households. The people of this Geog speak Tshangla (Sharchop). The Geog Tshogde (GT) is the main institutional body of the Geog and has 12 GT members. GT is chaired by the Gup (Block Headman), Mangmi (Block Representative) as Deputy Chairman, Gedrung (Clerk), and Tshogpa (Village Representative) as members and Gewog Administrative Officer and other Civil Servant as observers.

The Gewog has one airport at Yonphula which provide us better service facilities benefitting the people of our country. The Gewog has also a good business opportunity in future and presently the Gewog itself have 50 grocery shops and 24 restaurants benefitting the public in obtaining necessary food items. The Gewog is fully electrified by June 2010, and none of the village is left without electricity. In the field of Information and Communication, almost all the villages are connected with telephone and mobile services. The Gewog has one Post office  and BDBL,BNBL branch where it delivers postal and banking service  to the public. The Gewog is access to the media with the establishment of Kuensel Regional Office in 2006. The Gewog has one TV subscriber connecting most of the villages by providing daily news and updating information to the public.

Kanglung Geographic Location

Kanglung is located in Eastern Bhutan

  • Kanglung is located at latitude 27:16: 6 degrees North; longitude: 91:31:20 degrees East.
  • Kanglung is located 22 kilometers south of and above Tashigang Town within the Tashigang Dzongkhag (District). 
  • Kanglung’s elevation above sea level is ± 1,930 meters (± 6,350 feet).  This compares with Tashigang Town’s elevation of ± 1,070 meters (± 3,510 feet).
  • Kanglung is high on the ridge overlooking the Gamri Chhu (River), on a downward slope facing the northwest.

II. Agriculture

It is important to understand that the limited choices of the crops that are already cultivated by the farmers are mainly for economic purposes. The objectives during the 11th plan large scale production so that unit production would be increased. Further, setup efforts to strengthen existing farmers’ group would also pursued so as to consolidate them into more functional unit to increase their managerial and production capacity. Market shed, school linkage and establishment of other post-harvest technologies would also be pursued to take advantage of the location and marketing opportunity.

The geog has many services facilities and institutions from which benefits are delivered extensively. While the focuses of the Dzongkhag Agriculture were more into extension services, the Geog received extended services from the established Research Sub Centre, Khangma. The joint efforts between the Dzongkhag and the Research Sub Centre were benefited both in terms of infrastructure investment requirements and other required extension services.



III. Livestock

20-25% of the geog population is self-sufficient in dairy and poultry products.With access to the motor able road, it has the high potentiality in diary development program. In 2009-2010 FY, two groups of diary groups were established in Kanglung and Rongthung. In Dumkhar Manthung dairy group there are 40 members and in Dangling Dungkar Choling diary group there are 32 members. The construction of cow sheds and other works are under full swing. Once this works are complete, people will be self-sufficient through the sale of dairy products. A total of 3 private poultry farms were constructed at Namla and Yonphula. The major constraints with piggery backyard and poultry farming are the reluctance of adoption by the farmers due to religious point of view.

IV. Forestry

The activities under taken by the forestry extension officer are:

v  Water Source Protection.

v  Establishment of Community forest, private forest.

v  Issuance of permit to the public.

v  Look after marketing scope of forest products.

v  Nursery management and forestation and other forestry extension works.



V. Religion  and Culture

All the lhakhangs are equally important but the most important lhakhang is Yonphu Choeje lhakhang which was established in 16th century by the Terton Rigzin Pema Lingpa’s youngest son Sangdag. This lhakhang is valued for its importance significance by the public and it is the regarded as the oldest lhakhang in Kanglung Gewog. The public of Kanglung conducts two local tshechus in a year for three days. The different mask dances are showcase to the public by the local mask dancers. Presently the lhakhang is looked after by Lam Singye Wangchuk of Pangthang Gomdey.The Geog is dominant with the Yonphula and Pangthang Gomdey which is privately registered and benefiting to all the Geog public. The Kanglung Shedra too benefits the public of Kanglung Gewog. These institutions are almost used as a religious centre to the Geog. Kanglung Gewog has a total of 22 lhakhangs of which 2 are Government owned lhakhangs, 1 is a public lhakhang and the rest are privately owned lhakhangs. There are 14 different types of chortens. In total there are 105 Chortens in the Gewog.
